THE REAL READ

How far does a script actually get?

The Houseguest is a real script, and the writer gave us permission to show you its reads. Nothing on this page is a mock-up. Every quote below is word for word from the live pipeline. Only the project title has been changed to protect the writer’s next draft. Character names and the words in the read remain unchanged. And These are excerpts, not the full feedback: the first read came back at about 4,000 words, and the rewrite read at about 6,000. A full report reads like this the whole way through.

P.A.S.S. ONE

The first read.

The Producer read the first draft cold and called out what the movie can, and should be.

PRODUCER

ADVANCE WITH CONDITIONS

“My answer is yes, with conditions.”

“…the movie is not simply ‘wife feels threatened by baby mama’; it is ‘a woman trained to dismantle false stories is forced to dismantle one inside her own marriage.’ That is the version I can sell.”

“My main condition is positioning. The pages are openly in the Hand That Rocks the Cradle / domestic-intruder lane, and the market is currently close enough to that material that a buyer will ask fast: why this one now?”

The Producer advanced it with conditions. Next, the talent. They see the movie too, and they say what they need before they’d commit.

ATTACHMENTS

ATTACH WITH CONDITIONS · ESTABLISHED TALENT

“I want to play Tessa. She is not written as a woman who waits for the plot to rescue her.”

Lead Actor

“What I need protected is the intelligence under the emotional mess. […] I would be nervous only if a revision made her more broadly hysterical to heighten the genre. Do not do that.”

Lead Actor, her condition

“I can see the movie. […] I do not want exposition earlier. I want the camera to have more to notice.”

Director

The Studio Executive picked up the project. But, they held it in development and sent notes for a rewrite.

STUDIO EXECUTIVE

BOUGHT FOR DEVELOPMENT HELD THERE

“I am holding this in development. The blocker is not that the movie is unclear; it is that the package is not yet clean enough to survive the first question a studio head will ask: why this domestic intruder thriller, now, when the closest public-market neighbor is sitting this close?”

The first read ends there. The script was bought for development and held, and the full 4,000-word report lays out exactly what stands between this draft and a greenlight. Then it’s on the writer.

P.A.S.S. TWO

The rewrite.

The rewrite went back in with a writer’s note about what changed. Here’s the Producer on the new draft.

PRODUCER

ADVANCE

CRAFT SCORE 8

“You did the thing I asked on marketplace distinction. You also did the thing I asked on Noah.”

“The core is working.”

“My gut check: yes, this could become somebody’s favorite streaming thriller.”

The Producer is happy. The question is whether the talent and the studio agree.

They do. This time the commitments come without conditions.

ATTACHMENTS

ATTACH

CRAFT SCORE 8

“I would direct this draft. The difference for me is that Elena’s construction of herself is no longer a twist the movie explains late; it is now a visual system I can shoot through the body of the film.”

Director

“I want to play Tessa. I wanted her before; I want her more now…”

Lead Actor

“We commit to this draft.”

Producer, closing the session

With the talent in, the package holds. The Studio Executive held this project last time. Not this time.

STUDIO EXECUTIVE

ADVANCE TO GREENLIGHT

“My prior hold was simple: I could defend the project, but I could not defend it upward while the attachment package still had open questions… Those questions are answered on these pages.”

“The writer’s note says this was a real rewrite, and I see that on the page.”

Which leaves the last room, and the people who decide whether real money gets spent.

STUDIO GREENLIGHT

GREENLIT

On the campaign

“The campaign is no longer forced to sell ‘a woman and a baby invade a marriage’ and hope the third act proves there is more underneath.”

On production

“We would make The Houseguest at the contained streaming genre scale it is already built for.”

On the spend

“If we make this, we are making it around Tessa.”

The decision, from the Studio Head

“We greenlight The Houseguest as a contained streaming genre thriller. The path from here is not another development rewrite; it is making the movie at the scale the pages support.”

Nothing about the process changed between the two reads. The draft did.

Why we can show you this one.

The writer gave us permission to publish these reads. That’s the only reason this page exists. Your reads stay private. We don’t publish them or use them to market the product unless you explicitly give us permission.

Most first drafts won’t get four rooms deep, and the read will tell you why. The rooms wait for your rewrite.
